With
extraordinary geologic formations, Cueva de las Maravillas (Cave of Wonders) is
the first natural museum of the cave art of the Antilles.
More than
500 pre Columbian pictographs of great aesthetic and archeological value still
painted on its walls make it the most surprising tourist destination of the Dominican
Republic.

The depth of
the cave: 25m
Discovered
in 1926 and named then as - Cueva del Jagual - , is it known as -Cueva de
Maravilllas- since 1949, date in which the first official report was written for
the National Museum of the Dominican Republic.
According
to archeologists the Tainos used this cave more than a 1000 years ago for
religious and funeral rites.
It has been
rehabilitated since 2002. It has an internal footpath of 240 meters and is
equipped with special lights and ramps, a modern elevator and sidewalks that
facilitate visits by people with physical disabilities.
La
Romana
After the
visit of the cave we continue our tour to La Romana.

We stop for
shopping at a supermarket where you can buy gifts, rum, coffee and cigarettes for a very reasonable price.
Here we
have time to eat a bite. Lunch with a beverage is available from 5 US$.

Next we reach Altos
de Chavon.
Built in 1979 Altos
de Chavon looks like an old Mediterranean village, with a great view on the
river Chavon.

We will visit a
museum and a amphitheatre with space for 5000 Spectators. It was opened with a
concert of Frank Sinatra. In the village's church, San Estanislao, you will see
a statue, a donation of pope. There is enough time for a walk around, to have a
coffee and relaxing.
If you like a boat ride on the river Chavon
please book our Catalina Island excursion with River Chavon.
