Safari Adventure Tour
Explore the Dominican Country side
The Safari is our second most popular tour (the most popular is the Saona Crusoe VIP
). This excursion will show you the Dominican lifestyle and some very interesting areas of the country as part of small group (maximum 20 people). The multi-lingual guide will provide interesting facts and information and can answer any questions that you may have. We pick you up from your hotel in an open Safari truck and begin our exploration of the countryside.
Itinerary:
Our first stop is at the sugar cane fields, here you will be given a piece of raw sugar cane to taste. The region around La Romana and Higuey is the largest sugar cane producing area in the Dominican Republic. More than 100,000 people earn their living from Dominican sugar cane production and trade. You will see how the sugar cane is cut and loaded onto the wagons, as well as the old fashioned employment of huge oxen to pull the loaded wagons.
After stopping at the loading and weighing station, we will visit a Batey (a community where the sugar cane workers live with their families). You will see the school and medical clinic, and will get an idea how the poor and hardworking people at the base of the sugar cane industry live.
We move on to a cigar factory and a small Tobacco plantation. The Dominican Republic is one of the major cigar producing countries of the world, with quality comparable to that of Cuba. We will visit a typical colorful Dominican market, where you’ll see a wide variety of things for sale, displayed in an unusual way...
After that, we head into the mountains to see a typical Dominican countryside cottage, how coffee and cacao grows, and you can taste a cross section of tropical fruits. We continue our drive to a nearby ranch, where we go for a horseback ride and typical Dominican lunch is served.
After the lunch we will go to the Rio Chavon, cruise the river on a large barge and, if you want the challenge, you can follow in a canoe. We enjoy a sundowner drifting down stream through a beautiful gorge. This is the jungle, and the river valley has been the film set for the blockbusters Jurassic Park and Apocolypse Now. You will return to your hotel in the late afternoon.
